Legendary UK pirate stations from the late 80's early 90's, kickstarted the acid house and rave scene. Pagers were the go to method of reliable (untraceable) communicating, white label 12" promo vinyl records were mixed back to back on technics 1200/1210 turntables. Listeners often recorded these DJ sets on cassette tapes, to play back on their portable walkman personal cassette players. Various underground record shops began to spring up in town centres across the UK where you could buy the latest dance releases.
Pirate stations were illigal but a necessity, the mainstream stations would not play the music and the establishment did everything in its power to close the scene down. Forcing this unstoppable movement underground. The pirate radio stations went hand in hand with illigal underground raves and thousands of young people would meet at secret locations at the weekend to dance to this new sound.
Over time dance music would become mainstream, filtering into the tracks of mainstream pop stars and today its influence can be found everywhere.
