Deadly Nightshade or Atropa Belladonna, named after Atropas, one of the three Greek goddesses of fate and destiny. She was responsible for cutting the thread of life. And Belladonna comes from the Italian "bella-donna" (beautiful woman) as it was used by women during the Renaissance cosmetically for complexion and to dilate their pupils as this was believed to make them appear more attractive.

Deadly Nightshade is also connected to mythology, folklore and witchcraft, associated with the gathering of witches, it was used in various potions and as a main ingredient in flying potion. Also known as the devils herb, parents warned their children that if they ate the poison berries they would meet the devil in person!

The plant is also connected to Dyonisus, the Greek god of wine and exctasy. And Odysseus from Greek mythology, had his crew poisoned by deadly nightshade then turned into pigs by the witch/enchantress Circe, who was renowned for her vast knowledge of potions and herbs.
